To evaluate a selection of storm surge barrier concepts for a proposed barrier in Texas (USA), I-STORM members were invited to contribute their knowledge and experience during this Gate Design Workshop.

[title] => Gate Design Workshop Coastal Texas Project [subtitle] => Meeting - organised by I-STORM international [alias] => gate-design-workshop-coastal-texas-project [text] =>

The Coastal TX Study Team, a cooperation of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Texas General Land Office (TGLO), invited I-STORM members to contribute to a Gate Design Workshop which explored different possible barrier concepts, and selected concepts to be taken forward to initial design and the next level of feasibility analysis.

The team was particularly keen to hear from those who could contribute to design criteria discussions in the following areas:

Recap

During this meeting I-STORM members were given an exciting opportunity to contribute their knowledge and experience. In total about 45-50 people attended this workshop, with representatives travelling from across the USA, England, and the Netherlands and the USA, including TGLO, Rijkswaterstaat and Environment Agency and local universities.

Thank you

The workshop left the Coastal Texas Study Team with plenty of work to do to complete the study, but the discussions and recommendations from the group provided them much more clarity on the type or types of structures that would be best for the Galveston Entrance Channel. “This was a new type of undertaking for the network and I think we all agree that it was a tremendous success. Also, we would like to thank the members of I-STORM, both near and far, who participated. Your expertise and knowledge on the design, construction, operations and maintenance of large coastal structures is invaluable to the study team as we move forward in completing our feasibility report. We greatly appreciate everyone's contribution!”

In March 2019, I-STORM members were invited to contribute to a Gate Design Workshop, to explore different possible barrier concepts for a USA barrier proposal. This webinar gave an informative update on this project.

[title] => Coastal Texas Project Update [subtitle] => Webinar - organised by I-STORM international [alias] => coastal-texas-project-update [text] =>

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Texas General Land Office's (TGLO) Coastal TX Study Team are designing flood defences on the East Coast, to protect the area against storm surges. In March 2019, I-STORM members were invited to contribute to a Gate Design Workshop, to explore different possible barrier concepts, and select a concept (or concepts) to be taken forward to initial design and the next level of feasibility analysis. Many of our members attended the Galveston workshop in 2019 and this webinar – which is the first of I-STORM’s 2020 webinar series – was an opportunity to see how I-STORM helped shape the project, and how it has progressed since then.

During this webinar USACE and GLO gave an informative update on the Coastal Texas Project. The session consisted of a 1 hour presentation and 30 minute Q&A, hosted by our colleagues from USACE and the Coastal Texas Project Team.

The online meeting was very well attended and received excellent feedback. Attendees were very enthusiastic, so our thanks go to our colleagues at the USACE and TGLO for their fantastic and interesting presentations and their time answering the many questions members had!

An audio recording of this session is available to I-STORM members along with the slides for anyone who was unable to join on the day. Please contact enquiries@i-storm.org for further details.

During this webinar, which was only open for our I-STORM members, the attendees heard from the Environment Agency (UK), Rijkswaterstaat (NL) and South Louisiana Flood Protection Authority East (USA) on how they have continued maintenance and operations during this time. This webinar also highlighted many of the challenges regarding testing and social distancing.

Many thanks to all our presenters from the above organisations for their time and contributions to the discussion!

[title] => Essex Approach Webinar [subtitle] => Webinar - organised by I-STORM.EA [alias] => essex-approach-webinar [text] =>

The current COVID-19 pandemic is causing many challenges for storm surge barrier teams. Fluctuating staff levels and social distancing regulations mean contingency planning is crucial for the continued operation of our strategically important flood risk management assets. During this webinar our members shared their thoughts on how to approach this challenge.

This event was organised by the national network I-STORM.EA for all national and international I-STORM members. Thank you to all attendees for joining and to our speakers who gave a lively and interesting presentation!

Every year the test closures of the Dutch Maeslant Barrier and the Hartel Barrier take place in September. Normally this is a big event, but due to the Coronavirus measures, I-STORM member and barrier owner Rijkswaterstaat decided to reach the public via a livestream this year.

[title] => Test closure Maeslant Barrier [subtitle] => Live stream - organised by I-STORM.NL [alias] => test-closure-maeslant-barrier [text] =>

Rijkswaterstaat is responsible for almost all storm surge barriers in The Netherlands. It tests its barriers annually before storm season in order to be ready to face seasonal weather patterns. The test closure of the Maeslant Barrier, situated in the South of The Netherlands, is normally open to the public. However, taking into account the COVID-19 measures, Rijkswaterstaat decided to livestream the test closure of the barrier as well as the opening this year. This way the public can still join.

For the test closure two live streams were planned:

To view a summary of this test closure, please take a look at the summary of this event on YouTube channel of Rijkswaterstaat.

A full Annual Meeting is scheduled for 2021. During this 15th Annual Meeting we plan for our members to meet face to face and build relationships with counterparts from around the world. I-STORM wants to encourage its members to share knowledge of recent projects, research and best practices, etc. This meeting will therefore include presentations, workshops, a site visit to a storm surge barrier, technical tours led by operational staff (where possible) and a networking dinner. The 2021 event will be hosted by Rijkswaterstaat in Rotterdam.

Further information about this event will be released in due course. Please contact events@i-storm.org for any queries.
